Question by babydoll: Does anyone know everything that you can write-off on taxes?
I want to know what kind of stuff can you write off on your income taxes. I am doing updates on my house (i.e adding laminate floors, garage door, furnace) and my husband also started a landscape business so he bought machines and a truck and other items. Can anyone help me out?

Answer by Paul Ding
Nobody knows *everything* you can write off on taxes, even the IRS.

Any reasonable, customary, and necessary expenses for your business can be deducted. Big items aren’t expenses; they’re capital investments. You depreciate them instead of deducting them, but that’s still a writeoff.

Normally, land cannot be deducted or depreciated, but if your husband goes from being a landscaper to a full-fledged nurseryman, you will end up selling a ball of dirt with every yew, and a little topsoil with every yard of sod. You can *deplete* your land, because if you keep doing that, the topsoil ain’t gonna last forever. (And THAT is one you’ll never read in the “do your own taxes” manuals.)

Your husband should wear a uniform with his name embroidered on it. His uniforms and their cleaning become tax-deductible in that case. If he just wears blue jeans and flannel shirts, it’s a personal expense. Even though the uniforms cost a little more to buy, the tax deduction makes it less expensive in the long run.

Upgrading your house isn’t deductable now, but they increase the “basis” you have in it, reducing any profit you make when you sell the house. That’s not too important to many people, who will never exhaust the one-time exclusion of housing profit, but as a successful contractor, you might well find yourself owning a big enough house that your profit on that last sale will not be tax-free, so saving all those receipts will be really important.

Ashville is a very nice town. Pretty much the whole town is safe and comfortable. This is a place where A LOT of hippies live, not that its a bad thing. Downtown is always hoppin! There is always something to do. Cost of living is probably reasonable, you could find an apartment in town for probably 0 give or take. All in all it is very nice and a great place to live.

Does anyone know?

Question by jehut: Does anyone know?
I am a former teacher who is on disablilty. I do know I am not allowed to teach or tutor in any capacity.Does anyone know if it is legal for me to prepare lessons and/or search the net for suppementals for busy teachers? I have color copying and a laminating machine. If it is legal, what would be a fair price for such services?

Best answer:

Answer by devil1hunter
It would depend on how your disability is worded. No teaching or tutoring sounds like it has something to do with direct student contact. Preparing lesson plans would not involve contact, so you might be OK….It is hard to say without knowing more details of the disability. I would suggest contacting a lawyer. You should be able to find one that will give free legal advise…. Good Luck
