He makes a profit of 3.50 every time he sells an item.
So you divide 1000 by 3.5 to find the number of items he needs to sell to break even. I think the answer is 286.

However, this does not come to a round number – it is approximately 285.7, between 285 and 286 – so which is correct?
It is not until the 286th laminated card is sold that the owner recoups more than $1000 and starts to make a profit, so the answer is D.
