He makes a profit of 3.50 every time he sells an item.
So you divide 1000 by 3.5 to find the number of items he needs to sell to break even. I think the answer is 286.

So you just graph them and see where the intersection of the two lines are. In algebra 2 you should have a graphing calculator, enter the equation in y1 and y2.
The store owner makes $3.50 per laminated item ($4.00-50cents).
Therefore, if you divide $1000 by $3.50, you will get the number of cards he needs to sell.
However, this does not come to a round number – it is approximately 285.7, between 285 and 286 – so which is correct?
It is not until the 286th laminated card is sold that the owner recoups more than $1000 and starts to make a profit, so the answer is D.
1000 divided by 3.50 (4.00- .50) = 285.71
on the 286 unit the store owner will start making money
